Norbertine Bresslern-Roth (1891-1978, Austrian)

Norbertine Bresslern-Roth, cats in art, lino cut cats, illustrated catsNorbertine Bresslern-Roth was a gifted artist from a very early age. Her studies began in elementary school and she was seen as extremely talented. In 1912 she won a silver medal in the City of Graz after a successful exhibition. From 1921-1952 Norbertine Bresslern-Roth used the technique of linoleum cut to depict animals.  In 1928, she travelled to North Africa where she was influenced by subject matter and colouring. Her linocuts are very richly inked, and the colours positively glisten from the page. Later she went on to illustrate children’s books and to create tapestries and ivory miniatures.  Even though it can be said that the high point of her career was the ’20’s and ’30’s, ten thousand people attended her 1952 exhibition  in Graz.
