Nicolas Tarkhoff (1871-1930, Russian)

Nicholas Tarkhoff, Self-portrait, cat artNicolas Alexandrovitch Tarkhoff (1871-1930, Russian) was an impressionist painter born into a wealthy Moscow merchant family. Early on Tarkhoff showed an interest and aptitude for drawing and painting, and after doing his military service, he unsuccessfully tried to enter the Moscow School of Painting.  Even though rejected for his explosive temperament, Tarkoff began studying under Konstantin Korovin.  His works were first exhibited in Moscow in 1894 where they were positively reviewed as having a fresh new charm.

At the age of twenty-eight  Tarkoff travelled to Paris where he continued his art studies, moving to Paris permanently in 1899.  The art dealer Ambroise Vollard, and friend of Pierre Bonnard, exhibited Tarkoff’s works in 1906. His works were purchased by famous personalities such as Rothschild and the artist  and Tarkoff’s friend André Derain.

Tarkoff’s style is influenced by Gauguin, Van Gogh and Cezanne.  In 1904, after marriage, Tarkoff turned to domestic scenes revolving around his Parisian flat.  In these paintings he included his own cat, the optimal symbol of domesticity and motherhood which aptly reflected his new living situation.  His bright impressionist paintings including a cat show flamboyant strokes of color. Tarkhoff is quoted as saying, “Reproduce to the utmost the life forms by the richness of their colors.” And this he most certainly did.

In 1911, he purchased a property in Orsay where he was happy to paint the countryside and animals. However, with this move he became isolated from the Paris art scene, only maintaining relationships with a few friends such as Chagall and Derain. With the beginning of WWI, his art sales dropped and his financial situation worsened.

In 1930, he died in total poverty and was forgotten until the 1960’s.
