Arthur Heyer
Self-Portrait
1926
Kieselbach Galerie und Auktionshaus, Budapest
Arthur Heyer (1872-1931) is known for his many paintings of cats, in particular white Angoras. Because he loved to draw and paint cats so much, he acquired the nickname “Cat” Heyer. Heyer was interested in art at an early age and attended art school in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. He began his career by illustrating local newspaper articles. Later he moved to Budapest where he held his first exhibition in 1906. Heyer painted other animals, but his favorite was the white cat.

Want to know more about the cat in art, history and literature? Then Revered and Reviled is the book for you. Now available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle formats.

I have a Arthur Heyer painting, bought about 50 years ago at a yard sale. It is a white Persian cat, reaching for a white with gold rimmed cup and tea pot atop a table. I have been searching to see if prints were made from this, but have not seen anything similar. Where can I go for more information. I can send you a photo if that helps. Thank you
Oh…WOW! How exciting that you have that painting. You can ask at any of the online auction houses such as Christies.com or Sothebys.com. There are others too, just search for art auctions on Google. Good luck!
I have an original painting by A Hayer. Two cats sitting at the green drapes and looking up to a fly.
How much would bring if I put it up for auction.
WOW! Check on the auction sites and see if you can get an estimate there. Christies.com is pretty good.
Did Heyer Artur paint border collies. We bought a painting that is supposed to be by him, but…not sure. Like the painting, but not sure if he painted those types of dogs.
Arthur Heyer did paint several types of dogs. There is one of a French Bull dog and a terrier. I haven’t seen any of collies though. Is the painting signed? Can you send me a photo? Send to: LAVocelle@thegreatcat.org.
I wanted to note that #11 and the next to last painting in the images are not Arthur Heyer. Both are unmistakeably Beno Boleradszky, who endlessly painted fluffy white angoras in gardens. One of those two paintings, amusingly, bears Boleradszky’s usual dark signature upper right in the dark green foliage and also includes HEYER A in an uncharacteristic, clearly unmatched color bottom right. I recently saw an auction house that is usually reputable sell that one as a Heyer, with no mention of the legitimate, authentic signature visible upper right. If you collect, always do your research and be mindful of the fakes and misattributions.
A wonderful page, and a wonderful site. Thank you for compiling such a thorough, informative site! I can’t tell you how often I peruse, and how much I’ve learned.
Thanks so much Jessica for pointing that out. I will remove the questioned paintings and move them to Boleradszky’s page. So glad you enjoy the website!
