Ferdinando Scianna (1943- present, Italian) was born in Bagheria, Sicily and is a photographer who became interested in photography while studying at the University of Palermo in the 1960’s. When he moved to Milan in 1966, he began working as a photographer at L’Europeo and in the same year he won the Prix Nadar. He eventually became a journalist and has written many articlesl. In the late 1980’s he began working in fashion photography with Dolce & Gabbana.
Scianna became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1989 following in the footsteps of his mentor Henri Carter-Bresson.
Obviously a cat lover, Scianna has candidly captured many cats, some his own, but mostly those in natural environments.
He is quoted as saying: “My job is to photograph, and photographs don’t enable to build metaphors. Photographs show. They don’t demonstrate.”
