CALIFORNIA SPANGLED CAT

California Spangled CatHISTORY

The California Spangled cat is a domestic cat that was specifically bred to resemble wild cats such as the ocelot and leopard. After witnessing the poaching death of a leopard, Louis Leakey, the anthropologist, encouraged Paul Arnold Casey, Jr., who had worked with Leaky in Africa, to breed a domestic cat that would resemble a small leopard. The reason being to provide people with a miniature leopard to encourage protection of leopards in the wild.  California Spangled cats are a crossbreed of Abyssinian, American and British Shorthair. The California Spangle was introduced to the world via an iconic Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue cover photo in 1986.
