HISTORY

The Brazilian Shorthair cat, also known as “Pelo Curto Brasileiro”, originated from cats brought to Brazil by Portuguese ships around 1500 AD. In the 1980’s, an engineer Dr. Paulo Samuel Ruschi became interested in creating a purebred cat from Brazilian street cats. After many years, and with the help of traditional breeders, the Brazilian Shorthair descendants of the Felis Iberia came to be. They have been recognized as purebreds since 1998 by the World Cat Federation based in Germany. The Brazilian Shorthair project is managed by the BSICS – Brazilian Shorthair International Cat Society, which has headquarters in New York City and is a member of the WCF.
