Le chat aux poissons rouges - Henri Matisse, cats in art

Le chat aux poissons rouges
The Cat with Red Fish, Henri Matisse

The twentieth century was a time of rapid change inspired by major social movements and two World Wars. These changes affected the art of the century, creating more than ten major art movements. Even more than ever the cat continued to be painted in all the major styles of the century. From Realist portrayals in the early 1900’s to the pop art of Andy Warhol in the 50’s-80’s, the cat endured and increased in popularity as a subject in art. Cats in art whether Modern, Abstract, Cubist or Expressionist are very much present on 20th century canvases and are immortalized in its sculptures.

Here is an alphabetical list of over 235 artists who have captured the cat in art.  This page is a work in progress with each artist soon to have a page displaying his/her works of art with cats.  So please check back regularly for updates or subscribe and receive them automatically.

  1. Hi – you may want to add Xu BeiHong – one of the top Chinese painters of the 20th century ( with Zhan Daqian, Zao WouKi et al) ..

Xu BeiHong – 徐悲鴻 – From Wikipedia

Xu Beihong (Chinese: 徐悲鴻; pinyin: Xú Bēihóng; 19 July 1895 – 26 September 1953) was a Chinese painter born in Yixing, Jiangsu province. He was primarily known for his Chinese ink paintings of horses and birds and was one of the first Chinese artists to articulate the need for artistic expressions that reflected a modern China at the beginning of the 20th century. He was also regarded as one of the first to create monumental oil paintings with epic Chinese themes – a show of his high proficiency in an essential Western art technique

Thanks so much for your suggestion. There are so many artists that I haven’t gotten to. I do intend to do a category for Asian artists…just haven’t had the time. The website is a work in progress.
      All the best…
